Historically, when asked what they want for Christmas, kids would cite their favorite toys, clothes or video games. Lately, though, it seems that more and more of the younger generation are requesting cold hard cash for the holidays.

Perhaps you’re thinking: What? Are these kids too good for toys now? Or maybe you’re stuck on the idea that giving someone money is so impassive and unsentimental. Well, one Twitter user brainstormed a way to make giving someone cash more personal.

Christmas creativity

Twitter user Donnachaidha O’Chionnaigh felt that gifting cash seemed lackadaisical, so he shared his solution with the world.

“None of the kids wanted toys for Christmas this year, they just wanted cash,” O’Chionnaigh wrote in a Christmas day tweet. “Understandable, but cash as a gift, while practical, always feels impersonal, so I made special packaging.”

O’Chionnaigh said that his creative packaging went over well with the kids — and, apparently, it also went over well with the Twitter-sphere, as his post went viral.

In response to the attention, O’Chionnaigh answered some questions that were being posed in the comments about the logistics of his money-packaging:

“All of [the packaging was] made in Photoshop, printed on cardstock, and cut to shape,” he wrote. “I found pics of old blister pack figures online and either recreated them or heavily modified them, whichever was simpler.”

He continued by saying he sized his designs to print on 8.5×11, save for one which he formatted for 11×17.

In response to the demand for him to begin selling his innovative packaging, O’Chionnaigh wrote, “I don’t have an Etsy (or time!), so I probably won’t make these to sell — feel free to do your own. I hope all of you who celebrate had a great Christmas, and I wish you a happy 2020!”
