G-strings are out, quoth the New York Post.

Inspired by celebrity endorsements, millennials, and Gen Z’ers are allegedly ditching thongs and lacy undergarments in favor of the more comfortable drawers associated with their older counterparts.

Indeed, modern fashion stars like Kim Kardashian and Rhianna recently posted images of themselves wearing full-coverage, comfortable underwear. Rhianna sported a pair that will specifically feature in her lingerie line, Savage x Fenty.

But is the granny-panty trend really so new or revolutionary? Probably not. The underwear has stereotypically been a favorite of older folks for years, of course, but young celebrities seem to rediscover their appeal year after year.

In 2015, the likes of Taylor Swift and Rhianna (again), posted Instagram photos and walked runways in the underwear. (And no less than the New York Times proclaimed “Young Women Say No to Thongs.”)

In 2017, Glamour announced that they were back in fashion, citing the rise in sales from underwear brands and anecdotes from staff members about why they love them. (Unsurprisingly, comfort was the top reason for granny-panty appeal.)

By all means, go forth and celebrate comfortable undies — just keep in mind that this trend isn’t breaking new ground.

But if the trend is about getting a little more comfortable instead of squeezing into beauty ideals … Promote away, celebs!
