Halloween decorations have come a long way from a simple carved pumpkin on the porch. While the holiday has become more popular and the decorations more elaborate, technology has made special effects available to even those who are all thumbs (however, if you were really “all thumbs,” you wouldn’t need any help scaring neighborhood children).

The rise of projection decorations eliminated the work and danger of stringing lights, and video technology means you no longer need to dedicate space for storing Halloween decorations the rest of the year.

The AtmosFX Digital Decorating Kit gives you everything you need to project moving images on a TV screen, window, house facade, or anywhere else you’d like to scare folks.

When sold through the company site, the AtmosFX kit comes with 14 pre-loaded scenes, eight of them Halloween-related. You can also order additional scenes to fully customize your Halloween house. You may want to go big with a theme, like zombies, blood, or classic movie monsters.

AtmosFX offers video tutorials on the different ways you can use the Digital Decorator in — or on — your home.

YouTube Halloween tutorials

Last year, YouTuber spiney99 combined the techniques of projecting on the house itself with window projections (and music!) to create this Halloween light show.

Another possibility is to create a “hologram,” or an apparition that appears to float in space by itself. The trick is to project the digital effects onto an ethereal projection screen that appears invisible. YouTuber Monster Tutorials shows us how he rigged a floating ghost to greet trick-or-treaters in his home.

Jack-O’-Lantern Jamboree

One of the separate decorations available is the very popular Jack-O’-Lantern Jamboree, which projects faces onto your pumpkins (or any other surface). No carving, no candles, and these pumpkins sing and tell jokes!

Zach Breax went above and beyond with his Halloween setup in 2016. He coordinated two different displays with a sound mixing board and broadcast the audio on low-frequency FM, so they could be enjoyed at a distance.

You don’t have to go to those lengths to make digital projections work for your decorating scheme. And if you already have a projector, you can purchase the AtmosFX digital effects DVDs by themselves online, or at major retailers and your local pop-up Halloween store.
